Follow these instructions to connect to a remote computer using Windows 8:

  • On your local computer, click the start button at the lower-left to launch the start menu.
  • Start typing Remote Desktop Connection. You will see it appear at the right. Right-clicking on the program will allow you to pin it to the start menu or taskbar.

    • Enter your remote address in the Computer field in the form of {Address}:{PortNumber}. You can just click Connect here if you wish, or you can save a connection specific shortcut for quick access in the future. To create a connection specific shortcut, click Show Options.

    • Enter your user name in the field provided. You will also be given the option to allow the saving of your remote credentials. This is a personal preference, the implications of which will be explained later in this article. Once you have made your selections, click the Save As button and choose a location and name for your shortcut.

    • The first time you launch the shortcut you will see the following security warning. Check the box indicated by the arrow to avoid seeing it every time you connect.

    • You will now be prompted to enter your credentials. Enter your user name and password and, optionally, choose to remember your credentials. Please note that checking that box will allow unchallenged connection to your remote computer for anyone who has access to your profile on the local machine. Please consider using a password for your profile and be sure to lock your computer when it is not in use.
